"I found out about the Le Mans 24 Heures Velo event through my cycling clubs website "Team Milton Keynes" and as soon as I read about it I thought .............. Should I? Could I? I had butterflies in my stomach and then that was it, "Lynne's 2009 cycling challenge. " 24 hours around the most famous race track in the world on my road bike. The more I thought about it the more excited I became. My biggest bike challenge ever, a great opportunity to raise money for Cancer Research and a fantastic opportunity to promote our new venture of opening a Bed & Breakfast at the base of Alpe d'Huez in Bourg d'Oisans
Prior to entering I had to ask my husband Alan - "will you support me?" He said yes and encouraged me to enter. They call these events "solos" but all soloists need support, I couldn't achieve it without him.
Since entering I have had a few doubts, particularly when I tell people my plan and they look at me in this strange way as if to say "you're mad" and ask "why? [Ed - why not ride the National Championship 24hr Time Trial instead and set a club record? - I did try]" I get over this by thinking about what this will mean to me and others, what a personal achievement it will be and about raising money for Cancer Research.
I have written a number of letters asking for sponsorship and have had some really positive results from Team Milton Keynes, Farm Frittes, Torq ltd and Corley Cycles and I will now be concentrating on getting my fund raising going.
For the last few years I have always set myself a challenge; The Etape du Tour , The Marmotte, Off Road 12 hour solo, so this time it had to be 24 hours solo. I chose Le Mans 24 Heures Velo as I believe it will be big, it will buzz and it will give me a fantastic opportunity to achieve one of my ultimate goals, 24 hours on a bike whilst raising money for charity."
