Road race: Surrey League 6 July

Mike Wragg and Simon Fox got stuck in straight away with an attack which formed a lead group of eight.  Ones and twos bridged over and the break became unworkably large.   The racing became aggressive, with attack after attack.  Simon rode away on the hill to make a front group of three, but the other two were too strong and he returned to the peleton to get stuck in again – it was still early days.

.

A short while later Mike got involved in a move which resulted in a chase group of three pursuing the two leaders who were still going strong with 1.5 minutes to the good.  20km later the front groups were united, and one of the original leading pair blew up to leave 4.  Coming onto the short finishing circuit they had agreed to work together until the last lap, so they came into the last 4km with 2 minutes’ lead.  One of them was assured the win, however it wasn’t to be Mike!  A surprise attack from the back made it an equally-matched 2 against 2 in the run-in.  Mike made a formality of taking 3rd place, a good but somewhat disappointing result.
